Goal: Conceptual design of a pile down-ending tool that can be used for decommissioning projects. The tool is needed as a hinge on the side of the vessel used for decommissioning.
Result: An easy to operate pile down-ending tool that is not sensitive to marine growth. It can be used on 54″ and 60″ piles without any modifications. The pile down-ending tool only has two active hydraulic functions. One for clamping and one to bring the tool back in the position where it can receive the next pile. Two extra cylinders are part of a closed hydraulic circuit keeping the pile down-ending tool horizontal while no pile. This system allows the pile to move out of the down-ending plane during down-ending preventing large sideways bending moments on the hinge.
