Goal: Finite element analysis of a bulk tank on a seagoing vessel. Taking into account ship accelerations due to pitch and roll. Tanks were placed in different location on board.
Result: We analyzed the ship motions and the resulting accelerations at each tank location. The worst combinations of accelerations were analyzed by means of finite element analyses in Femap. The bulk tanks were placed below the main deck and it proved to be necessary to weld them to the mezzanine deck in order to reduce the stresses and deformations in the bulk tank legs.
